Neo Rauch (born in 1960, Leipzig, Germany) is a famous Germany artist whose paintings develop the intersection of his personal history with the politics of industrial alienation. His works reflect the influence of socialist realism, and owe a debt to Surrealists Giorgio de Chirico and René Magritte, although Rauch hesitates to align himself with surrealism. He studied at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig, and he lives in Markkleeberg, and works as the principal artist of the New Leipzig School. (Neo Rauch Baden Baden)

Neo Rauch uses a distinctive palette of bright acidic colors contrasting with dark and ominous shadows to conjure up a parallel world that is full of paradoxes. Although many elements of Rauch’s scenes seem familiar, his landscapes are populated by figures that seems alienated from each other, and the normal is mixed freely with the bizarre.
